Directions to the Abbey
Approaching from the south and west the Abbey is easily picked out in the skyline but traffic systems in Dunfermline City Centre do not make it too easy to reach.
Our map shows the location of the Abbey in Dunfermline.
FROM THE SOUTH: For those entering from the south via Queensferry Road, after passing an ASDA on your right take left at the railway viaduct, pass ARC Car Wash and then at the traffic lights turn right up Moodie Street. Take first left at the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace and follow the round around the corner. Parking can be accessed either first left in Monastery Street or in the St Margaret Street Car Park.
FROM THE WEST: Take A985 from Kincardine towards Rosyth ignoring the signs to Dunfermline. Take left at the B9156 signposted Dunfermline and follow country road into Dunfermline. Pass the Cricket and Rugby Clubs on your left and follow road round right to traffic lights at the foot of Moodie Street where you turn left up the hill and follow the directions as above.
FROM THE EAST: From Exit 3 on the M90 follow signs for Dunfermline and passed East End Park, the home of Dunfermline Athletic on your right. At a large roundabout (Sinclair Gardens) take second exit and follow East Port into City Centre. The Carnegie Hall will be on your left. When you meet the pedestrianised area at Marks and Spencer turn left down New Row and take first right into Canmore Street. Take first left into Abbey Park Place and with a bit of good luck you may get a parking space (free). If not follow the road along to the end and turn left into St Margaret Street where there are pay and display car parks.
FROM THE NORTH: Entering Dunfermline on the A823 from Crieff take left at the first set of traffic lights, turning along Carnegie Drive. At the Sinclair Gardens roundabout take the outside lane and the fourth exit. Follow road into City Centre. When you meet the pedestrianised area at Marks and Spencer turn left down New Row and take first right into Canmore Street. Take first left into Abbey Park Place and with a bit of good luck you may get a parking space. If not follow the road along to the end and turn left into St Margaret Street where there are pay and display car parks.
BY BUS: If travelling by bus stay on until it gets to Dunfermline Bus Station. Leave the Bus Station by the south door on to Queen Anne Street and take the path in front of you down on to the High Street. Turn right at High Street then left at the City Chambers (Town Clock) into Kirkgate and continue straight down St Catherine’s Wynd. The Abbey is straight in front of you. The walk should take less than five minutes.
BY RAIL: There are regular trains from Edinburgh to Dunfermline Town Railway Station. There would be taxis at the railway station but the Abbey is walkable from the station, it would take about 15 minutes.
Exit station on the northbound platform. Immediately bear left and cross the footbridge. At the other side of the dual carriageway that you have just crossed, follow the road (Netherton Broad Street) westwards until you come to the traffic lights at the Lyne Tavern. You will have passed (on the opposite side of the road, The Brig Cafe and an ARC car wash.
At the traffic lights turn right up the hill and take the west side of the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace. You will see the Abbey Church Tower high in front of you. Continue up Moodie Street until you see the entrance to the Abbey on your left.
